Cathy Henson - Founder and President
Cathy Henson created the Georgia School Council Institute in 2000 to encourage collaboration among parents, educators and members of the business community to improve Georgia’s public schools. At the forefront of education reform, she served on Georgia’s Education Reform Commission in 1999 and 2000, and on the Closing the Achievement Gap Commission in 2001 and 2002. Ms. Henson also served on the State Board of Education from 1999 to 2003 and was the first woman in Georgia to be elected Chair of the board.

An attorney by profession, Ms. Henson has been an advocate for the improvement of public education as a parent, educator and member of the business community. Early in her career, Cathy taught 7th grade English in upstate New York. After moving to Georgia, she served as the Legislative Chair and President of the Georgia PTA and was instrumental in empowering parents to be involved in Georgia’s public schools. Under her leadership, membership in the Georgia PTA increased to 360,000 members.

Currently, Cathy Henson serves on numerous boards, including Georgia State University Foundation, Georgia Perimeter College Foundation, Piedmont College Board of Trustees, and the Tech High Charter School in Atlanta. Cathy is a popular and highly regarded speaker on any topic related to education. For several years Georgia Trend magazine named Ms. Henson one of the “100 most powerful and influential Georgians.”
